Be sure your paper size is set to A4 in portrait orientation. Use reasonable margins such as top 2.1 cm, bottom 2.5 cm (leaving space for the page number), left and right 2.3 cm. You do not want very narrow margins, but the default 2.5 cm set by Microsoft Word (actually 1 inch) is unnecessarily generous.

Do not place borders or frames around the page. Your thesis should reflect plain, concise and clear scientific writing. Unnecessary decoration has no place in this.
